How this calculator works
Periodic rate = nominal annual rate ÷ compounding periods. Effective annual yield = ((1 + periodic rate)^periods − 1) × 100. The implementation uses log1p and expm1 for stable evaluation.
Variables and inputs
- Nominal annual rate
- Required numeric input. finite percentage from −99% to 1,000%; enter 8 for 8%, not 0.08.
- Compounding periods per year
- Required numeric input. whole number from 1 to 365; equal periodic compounding intervals.
How to interpret the result
The calculator returns effective annual yield as a percentage, periodic interest rate implied by the entered nominal rate, one-year growth factor after the selected compounding frequency, entered nominal rate and compounding frequency for comparison. Read each output against the assumptions you entered, compare alternatives one variable at a time, and use the result as an estimate rather than a promise.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing units or entering a rate as a decimal when the field requests a percentage.
- Rounding intermediate values instead of the final displayed result.
- Leaving out a cost, timing rule or local requirement listed in the assumptions below.
Practical uses
Use the annual percentage yield (apy) calculator to check a real scenario, compare a changed assumption and explain the arithmetic before relying on a quote, specification or decision.
Worked example
For an 8% nominal annual rate compounded monthly, the periodic rate is 8% ÷ 12 = 0.6667% and the effective annual yield is approximately 8.299951%, producing a one-year growth factor of about 1.083.
Assumptions and limitations
- the entered rate is a nominal annual percentage and compounding occurs in equal intervals at the entered whole-number frequency
- the nominal rate and compounding frequency remain constant for one modeled year while principal and credited interest remain in the account
- no deposits or withdrawals occur during the modeled year
- fees, taxes, tiered or stepped rates, bonuses, minimum-balance rules and provider-specific day-count conventions are excluded
- the result is a deterministic nominal-to-effective conversion and not an institution-specific regulatory disclosure, product quote or investment recommendation
- negative nominal rates are supported within the declared domain, but the interpretation may not match every provider or jurisdiction

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between nominal rate and APY?
A nominal annual rate states the annual rate before within-year compounding. APY includes the effect of the selected compounding frequency over one modeled year.
Why is APY usually higher than a positive nominal rate?
When credited interest remains with principal, later periods can earn on earlier interest. More frequent compounding can therefore raise the effective annual yield.
Does this result match every bank's disclosed APY?
Not necessarily. Provider disclosures can depend on balance tiers, fees, bonus conditions, day-count methods and applicable rules that this nominal-to-effective conversion does not model.
Can this calculator handle a negative nominal rate?
Yes, from −99% upward within the declared bounds, provided the periodic growth factor remains positive. Confirm whether that model suits the product or jurisdiction you are assessing.
