How this calculator works

Convert bitrate to bits per second, multiply by (1 + overhead percentage), session seconds, sessions per day and days, then divide by 8 for bytes and 1,000,000,000 for decimal GB. Cap outputs solve the same relationship against the entered cap.

Variables and inputs

Media or transfer bitrate
Required numeric input. greater than zero; maximum 1,000,000,000 selected units.
Minutes per session
Required numeric input. greater than zero; maximum 10,000,000 minutes.
Sessions per day
Required numeric input. whole number between 1 and 1,000,000.
Number of days
Required numeric input. whole number between 1 and 3,660.
Estimated protocol overhead percentage
Required numeric input. between 0 and 100 inclusive.
Optional data cap in decimal gigabytes
Optional numeric input. zero disables cap outputs; otherwise non-negative.

How to interpret the result

The calculator returns total decimal gigabytes, per-session and per-day usage, effective bitrate including overhead, data-cap percentage and remaining allowance, sessions and continuous hours until cap, comparison totals at four common bitrates. Read each output against the assumptions you entered, compare alternatives one variable at a time, and use the result as an estimate rather than a promise.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing units or entering a rate as a decimal when the field requests a percentage.
  • Rounding intermediate values instead of the final displayed result.
  • Leaving out a cost, timing rule or local requirement listed in the assumptions below.

Practical uses

Use the data usage calculator to check a real scenario, compare a changed assumption and explain the arithmetic before relying on a quote, specification or decision.

Worked example

At 5 Mbps for two 60-minute sessions per day over 30 days with 5% overhead, effective bitrate is 5.25 Mbps and estimated usage is 141.75 GB decimal.

Assumptions and limitations

  • bitrate prefixes use decimal SI values
  • the entered bitrate is sustained for the full session
  • overhead is included only when explicitly entered
  • results are planning estimates; variable bitrate, compression, buffering, protocol behavior and provider accounting can change actual usage
  • a data cap is user supplied and does not represent a provider contract

Important notes

Results are estimates based on the values entered. Confirm rates, prices, units and professional requirements that apply in your location. Review the Answer Atlas Calculation Standard and corrections policy for formula, privacy and correction rules.

Frequently asked questions

How does bitrate become data usage?

Multiply bits per second by the number of seconds, then divide by eight to convert bits to bytes. Answer Atlas applies the selected schedule and decimal GB conversion transparently.

Does this calculator measure my internet connection?

No. It performs no network test and receives no provider data. Enter the bitrate and schedule you want to model.

Why can actual usage differ?

Media can use variable bitrate and providers may count protocol traffic differently. Compression, adaptive quality, buffering and interrupted sessions can also change real consumption.
