How this calculator works
Monthly payment uses fixed-rate amortization with monthly rate r = annual rate ÷ 1,200. Total repayments = payment × months. Estimated finance cost = total repayments + upfront fee − amount borrowed.
Variables and inputs
- Business loan amount
- Required numeric input. greater than zero and no more than 1 billion; finite currency amount.
- Annual interest-rate assumption
- Required numeric input. from 0% to 100%; fixed nominal annual rate.
- Loan term
- Required numeric input. whole number from 1 to 1,200 months.
- Upfront fee
- Required numeric input. zero or greater; must remain less than the loan amount.
How to interpret the result
The calculator returns estimated monthly principal-and-interest payment, net cash received after the entered upfront fee, total of the equal monthly repayments, estimated finance cost including the entered upfront fee. Read each output against the assumptions you entered, compare alternatives one variable at a time, and use the result as an estimate rather than a promise.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing units or entering a rate as a decimal when the field requests a percentage.
- Rounding intermediate values instead of the final displayed result.
- Leaving out a cost, timing rule or local requirement listed in the assumptions below.
Practical uses
Use the business loan cost calculator to check a real scenario, compare a changed assumption and explain the arithmetic before relying on a quote, specification or decision.
Worked example
A 500,000 loan at an entered 14% annual interest rate for 36 months with a 10,000 upfront fee estimates a 17,088.81 monthly payment, 490,000 net cash received, 615,197.34 total repayments and 125,197.34 finance cost.
Assumptions and limitations
- payments are equal, monthly and made over the entered whole-number term
- the entered annual interest rate remains fixed and is divided into twelve monthly periods
- the upfront fee is paid once and reduces net proceeds without changing the stated principal
- full calculation precision is retained before user-facing rounding
- This is a planning estimate based only on the values entered and is not an APR calculation or regulated lender disclosure
- The estimate excludes variable rates, taxes, late charges, penalties, balloon payments, collateral, covenants and lender-specific rounding
- The output is not a lender offer, approval decision, eligibility assessment, affordability recommendation or legal advice
Important notes
Results are estimates based on the values entered. Confirm rates, prices, units and professional requirements that apply in your location. Review the Answer Atlas Calculation Standard and corrections policy for formula, privacy and correction rules.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the estimated finance cost higher than the interest alone?
The estimate adds the entered upfront fee to the total monthly repayments, then subtracts the amount borrowed. This makes the selected fee visible alongside interest cost.
Is this business loan result the same as APR?
No. APR may follow jurisdiction-specific rules about included charges, timing and compounding. This calculator reports a transparent planning estimate from the entered rate and fee.
What does net cash received mean in this estimate?
Net cash received is the entered loan amount minus the entered upfront fee. It shows the simplified proceeds available if that fee is deducted once at origination.
Can I compare two business-loan offers with this calculator?
Calculate each offer separately using its stated amount, fixed interest rate, term and upfront fee, then compare payment, net proceeds and finance cost on the same basis.
