Aspect ratio preserves shape, not image quality. Rounding to whole pixels can introduce a tiny ratio difference. This tool does not resize, upload, inspect or store an image.

How this calculator works

Aspect ratio is width divided by height. When width is set, scaled height is target width divided by the aspect ratio; when height is set, scaled width is target height multiplied by the aspect ratio.

Variables and inputs

Source width
Required numeric input. whole pixels; 1 to 10,000,000.
Source height
Required numeric input. whole pixels; 1 to 10,000,000.
Dimension to set
Required numeric input. width or height only.
Target dimension
Required numeric input. whole pixels; 1 to 10,000,000.

How to interpret the result

The calculator returns reduced ratio, decimal ratio, orientation, proportionally scaled dimensions, nearest whole-pixel dimensions, source megapixels. Read each output against the assumptions you entered, compare alternatives one variable at a time, and use the result as an estimate rather than a promise.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing units or entering a rate as a decimal when the field requests a percentage.
  • Rounding intermediate values instead of the final displayed result.
  • Leaving out a cost, timing rule or local requirement listed in the assumptions below.

Practical uses

Use the image aspect ratio calculator to check a real scenario, compare a changed assumption and explain the arithmetic before relying on a quote, specification or decision.

Worked example

A 1920 × 1080 image reduces to 16:9. Setting the width to 1280 gives a proportional height of 720 pixels, while the source contains 2.0736 megapixels.

Assumptions and limitations

  • width and height describe rectangular pixel dimensions
  • pixels are treated as square display samples for proportional sizing
  • the target keeps the source aspect ratio
  • megapixels use one million pixels
  • does not resize, upload, inspect or store image files
  • does not estimate compression, file size, resolution quality or print sharpness
  • whole-pixel rounding can introduce a small ratio difference
  • does not account for pixel aspect ratios other than square pixels

Important notes

Results are estimates based on the values entered. Confirm rates, prices, units and professional requirements that apply in your location. Review the Answer Atlas Calculation Standard and corrections policy for formula, privacy and correction rules.

Frequently asked questions

How is image aspect ratio calculated?

Divide width by height. For whole-pixel dimensions, both values can also be divided by their greatest common divisor to produce a reduced width:height ratio.

Why is the scaled result sometimes fractional?

Exact proportional scaling can produce part of a pixel. The calculator shows both the exact result and the nearest whole-pixel dimensions.

Does this tool upload my image?

No. It uses only the dimensions you enter and performs the calculation locally in your browser.
