How this calculator works

Present value = future value ÷ (1 + annual discount rate ÷ 100 ÷ compounds per year)^(compounds per year × years). Present-value factor = 1 ÷ discount factor. Value difference = future value − present value.

Variables and inputs

Future value
Required numeric input. from zero to 1 billion; finite currency or same-unit amount.
Nominal annual discount rate
Required numeric input. from -99% to 100%; divided evenly across the selected compounding periods.
Time until the future value
Required numeric input. from 0.1 to 100 years; decimal years are supported.
Compounding periods per year
Required numeric input. whole number from 1 to 365.

How to interpret the result

The calculator returns present value in the same unit as the future value, present-value factor, value difference between future and present amounts, periodic discount rate, total number of compounding periods, reverse check against the entered future value. Read each output against the assumptions you entered, compare alternatives one variable at a time, and use the result as an estimate rather than a promise.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing units or entering a rate as a decimal when the field requests a percentage.
  • Rounding intermediate values instead of the final displayed result.
  • Leaving out a cost, timing rule or local requirement listed in the assumptions below.

Practical uses

Use the present value calculator to check a real scenario, compare a changed assumption and explain the arithmetic before relying on a quote, specification or decision.

Worked example

A future value of 20,000 discounted at a nominal annual rate of 7% for 10 years with monthly compounding has a present value of about 9,951.93, a present-value factor of about 0.497596 and 120 total periods.

Assumptions and limitations

  • the future amount is one lump sum and uses the same currency or unit as the result
  • the entered nominal annual rate is divided evenly across the selected compounding periods
  • the rate, time horizon and frequency remain constant
  • full calculation precision is retained before display formatting
  • This is a transparent scenario estimate, not a forecast, valuation opinion or investment recommendation
  • Negative discount rates are supported and can make the present value exceed the future value
  • Periodic cash flows, fees, taxes, inflation, market risk and provider-specific conventions are excluded

Important notes

Results are estimates based on the values entered. Confirm rates, prices, units and professional requirements that apply in your location. Review the Answer Atlas Calculation Standard and corrections policy for formula, privacy and correction rules.

Frequently asked questions

What does present value mean?

It is the amount today that would grow to the entered future lump sum under the exact rate, time and compounding assumptions you provide.

Why does compounding frequency change the result?

The nominal annual rate is divided across the selected number of periods, and the resulting periodic factor is applied for the total number of periods.

Can I enter a negative discount rate?

Yes, within the supported range. A negative rate reduces the compounding factor, so the calculated present value can be greater than the future amount.

Does this calculate the present value of an annuity or cash-flow series?

No. It discounts one future lump sum only. Periodic or uneven cash flows require a different model.
