How this calculator works
With monthly rate r = annual rate ÷ 1,200 and n = years × 12, projected balance = starting balance × (1 + r)^n + monthly contribution × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r. At a zero rate, projected balance = starting balance + monthly contribution × n.
Variables and inputs
- Starting balance
- Required numeric input. from zero to 1 billion; finite currency amount.
- Monthly contribution
- Required numeric input. from zero to 1 billion; fixed end-of-month amount.
- Annual rate assumption
- Required numeric input. from 0% to 100%; constant scenario assumption.
- Savings period
- Required numeric input. from 0.1 to 80 years.
How to interpret the result
The calculator returns projected savings balance under the entered constant-rate scenario, total starting balance plus modeled contributions, estimated growth above the contributed amount. Read each output against the assumptions you entered, compare alternatives one variable at a time, and use the result as an estimate rather than a promise.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing units or entering a rate as a decimal when the field requests a percentage.
- Rounding intermediate values instead of the final displayed result.
- Leaving out a cost, timing rule or local requirement listed in the assumptions below.
Practical uses
Use the recurring savings calculator to check a real scenario, compare a changed assumption and explain the arithmetic before relying on a quote, specification or decision.
Worked example
A 10,000 starting balance plus 1,000 contributed at each month end for 10 years under a constant entered 6% annual rate estimates a 182,073.31 balance, 130,000 contributed and 52,073.31 growth.
Assumptions and limitations
- the entered annual rate remains constant and is divided into twelve monthly periods
- the starting balance is present before the first modeled month
- each fixed contribution is added at the end of a month
- full calculation precision is retained before user-facing rounding
- This is planning arithmetic based only on user-entered assumptions and is not investment, tax or legal advice
- Actual outcomes may differ because rates, fees, taxes, contribution timing and provider rounding can change
- The entered rate is not a forecast, provider quote or guaranteed return
Important notes
Results are estimates based on the values entered. Confirm rates, prices, units and professional requirements that apply in your location. Review the Answer Atlas Calculation Standard and corrections policy for formula, privacy and correction rules.
Frequently asked questions
When does the calculator assume each contribution is made?
Each fixed monthly contribution is modeled at the end of a month. Deposits made at a different time can produce a different result.
What does estimated growth include?
Estimated growth is the projected balance minus the starting balance and all modeled monthly contributions. It does not deduct taxes or fees.
What happens when the entered annual rate is zero?
The calculator adds the starting balance and all modeled contributions without adding growth, avoiding division by zero.
Does the result guarantee what a savings account or investment will earn?
No. The rate is only a constant scenario assumption entered by the user. Actual returns, rates, fees and taxes can differ.
