Estimate the raw pixel payload for one image or a batch. Scanlines are rounded up to a whole byte; compression, metadata and format headers are deliberately excluded.

How this calculator works

Bits per pixel = channels x bits per channel. Row bytes = ceiling(width x bits per pixel / 8). Image bytes = row bytes x height. Total bytes = image bytes x image count. Decimal MB/GB use powers of 1000; MiB/GiB use powers of 1024.

Variables and inputs

Width
Required numeric input. whole pixels; 1 to 100,000.
Height
Required numeric input. whole pixels; 1 to 100,000.
Channels per pixel
Required numeric input. whole number; 1 to 16.
Bits per channel
Required numeric input. whole number; 1 to 64.
Number of images
Required numeric input. whole number; 1 to 1,000.

How to interpret the result

The calculator returns pixels per image, bits per pixel, byte-rounded row size, row padding bits, bytes per image, batch bytes, decimal MB and GB, binary MiB and GiB. Read each output against the assumptions you entered, compare alternatives one variable at a time, and use the result as an estimate rather than a promise.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing units or entering a rate as a decimal when the field requests a percentage.
  • Rounding intermediate values instead of the final displayed result.
  • Leaving out a cost, timing rule or local requirement listed in the assumptions below.

Practical uses

Use the uncompressed image size calculator to check a real scenario, compare a changed assumption and explain the arithmetic before relying on a quote, specification or decision.

Worked example

A 1920 x 1080 image with four 8-bit channels has 32 bits per pixel, 7,680 bytes per row and 8,294,400 bytes per image: 8.2944 MB or 7.91015625 MiB before format overhead or compression.

Assumptions and limitations

  • width and height describe rectangular raster pixels
  • channels means samples stored for each pixel
  • sample depth is constant for every channel
  • each row begins on a byte boundary
  • images in a batch use the same dimensions and sample layout
  • estimates an uncompressed raster payload, not a final PNG, JPEG, WebP, TIFF or other file size
  • real formats may add headers, metadata, palettes, filters, compression or row-alignment padding
  • does not estimate memory used by an application or graphics API
  • does not upload, inspect or store image files

Important notes

Results are estimates based on the values entered. Confirm rates, prices, units and professional requirements that apply in your location. Review the Answer Atlas Calculation Standard and corrections policy for formula, privacy and correction rules.

Frequently asked questions

Why can the result differ from the file size on disk?

The calculator estimates raw scanline payload. File formats can add metadata and headers or reduce size through compression; some systems also impose extra row alignment.

What should I enter for channels?

Use the number of stored samples per pixel, such as 1 for grayscale, 3 for RGB or 4 for RGBA, when that matches your source data.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

MB uses 1,000,000 bytes. MiB uses 1,048,576 bytes. Both are shown so the convention is explicit.
