How this calculator works

Future value = present value × (1 + annual rate ÷ 100 ÷ compounds per year)^(compounds per year × years). Estimated growth = future value − present value.

Variables and inputs

Present value
Required numeric input. from zero to 1 billion; finite currency or same-unit amount.
Nominal annual rate
Required numeric input. from -99% to 100%; divided evenly across the selected compounding periods.
Time horizon
Required numeric input. from 0.1 to 100 years; decimal years are supported.
Compounding periods per year
Required numeric input. whole number from 1 to 365.

How to interpret the result

The calculator returns future value in the same unit as the present value, accumulation factor, estimated growth between present and future amounts, periodic rate, total number of compounding periods, reverse check against the entered present value. Read each output against the assumptions you entered, compare alternatives one variable at a time, and use the result as an estimate rather than a promise.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing units or entering a rate as a decimal when the field requests a percentage.
  • Rounding intermediate values instead of the final displayed result.
  • Leaving out a cost, timing rule or local requirement listed in the assumptions below.

Practical uses

Use the future value calculator to check a real scenario, compare a changed assumption and explain the arithmetic before relying on a quote, specification or decision.

Worked example

A present value of 10,000 compounded at a nominal annual rate of 7% for 10 years with monthly compounding has a future value of about 20,096.61, an accumulation factor of about 2.009661 and 120 total periods.

Assumptions and limitations

  • the present amount is one lump sum and uses the same currency or unit as the result
  • the entered nominal annual rate is divided evenly across the selected compounding periods
  • the rate, time horizon and frequency remain constant
  • full calculation precision is retained before display formatting
  • This is a transparent scenario estimate, not a forecast, valuation opinion or investment recommendation
  • Negative rates are supported and can make the future value lower than the present value
  • Periodic contributions, withdrawals, fees, taxes, inflation, market risk and provider-specific conventions are excluded

Important notes

Results are estimates based on the values entered. Confirm rates, prices, units and professional requirements that apply in your location. Review the Answer Atlas Calculation Standard and corrections policy for formula, privacy and correction rules.

Frequently asked questions

What does future value mean?

It is the amount one present lump sum would become under the exact nominal annual rate, time and compounding assumptions you enter.

How does compounding frequency affect this future-value scenario?

For the same nominal annual rate, the frequency changes both the periodic rate and how many times that factor is applied; the result shows both values so the forward-growth assumption stays visible.

Can I enter a negative annual rate?

Yes, within the supported range. A negative rate reduces the periodic factor, so the calculated future value can be lower than the present amount.

Does this include monthly contributions or withdrawals?

No. It compounds one present lump sum only. Recurring or uneven cash flows require a different model.
